On The Root, we like to keep it real. Besides, who doesn’t feel a twinge of envy when they catch a glimpse of a celebrity climbing out of their snazzy supercar in the Daily Mail or some other publication? This week we’re serving up a look at celebrities’ first cars plus affordable, reasonably priced cars some of them still own – which some of you, our young driver car insurance customers, also drive.
Andy Murray – VW Polo
Ranked 3rd in the top 5 cars Carrot Insurance covers, tennis ace Andy Murray’s first car was a VW Polo, which he bought at 21 after passing his driving test. Having sold the Ferrari 430 he bought soon after because he felt like a “prat” in it, Andy also parted company with his Aston. But he still owns his beloved 2008 Polo, as he loves its practical size and discrete image, saying “it’s a good car to pick people up from the station and those sort of things” when interviewed in The Independent. One of Carrot’s marketing team owns a VW Polo, too, and loves it just as much.
Wayne Rooney – Ford SportKa
After tearing up his L-plates in 2003, footballer Wayne Rooney, then at Everton, took the keys to a Ford SportKa in ‘imperial blue’, matching the club’s colours. With a 1.6-litre engine, sporty styling and a focus on fun handling, it would’ve made quite a nice first car for Wayne, who has since then predictably splashed out on all manner of exotic cars including Aston Martins. In case you’re wondering, the ROO N1 number plate isn’t legit and was just used for the publicity photos.
Tinie Tempah – Vauxhall Corsa
By complete coincidence, this British rapper’s first car was British – none other than the mightily successful Vauxhall Corsa, which can’t quite beat the annual best-seller which is Ford’s Fiesta, but gives it a very good run for its money. Tinie got his Corsa in 2005 so we’re guessing it was the generation shown below. He told The Sun Motors: “around 2005, I always wanted one. For a lad at the time, it was a common car, and I was a bit of a follower so went with what everyone else had. But I did put a DVD player in it.”
Ed Sheeran – MINI Cooper
You may recall that when the country’s favourite Carrot-haired popstar appeared on BBC’s Top Gear in January 2015 and drove the show’s Reasonably Priced Car around the track, he hadn’t even got a driving licence so proved fairly erratic to say the least. A few months later, in July, he bought his first car, a MINI Cooper, which was rather modest considering the fortune he earns. He didn’t pass his test until October, though, when he proudly tweeted: “Passed my driving test yesterday, zoom zoom zoom.” Ed learnt to drive with Total Driving in Ipswich. Let us know if you had lessons from this same driving school. Britney Spears drives a MINI Cooper too and more specifically a white convertible ‘S’ model, as part of her large collection of cars, including plenty of eye-wateringly expensive ones, as you can imagine.
Naomie Harris – Nissan Micra
As Miss Moneypenny in the James Bond 007 Skyfall and Spectre movies, Naomi is seen driving an iconic Land Rover Defender, which has now ceased production, causing many grown men, and indeed women, to shed a tear. Actress Naomie’s first car was a Nissan Micra. “I’ve never had aspirations to drive a Porsche or anything like that, so when I passed my test at 17, I bought a Nissan Micra. I loved the sense of independence, and I don’t drink, so I was always the designated driver”, she revealed in an interview. She is 39 now, making it 1993 when she passed her test, meaning Naomie most likely drove a second generation Micra like this one.
Daniel Radcliffe – Fiat Grande Punto
By the time the Harry Potter actor turned 18 back in 2007, he’d built up a fortune said to be worth £23million, but he chose to splash (or rather, sprinkle) his cash on a Fiat Grande Punto. “He is quite a sensible lad and has been planning for this day for a while”, one of Daniel’s friends revealed to The Daily Mail at the time, adding: “The first thing he wants to buy himself to celebrate his 18th birthday is a car. He’s done a bit of research and really likes the Fiat Grande Punto. Daniel is concerned about the environment and this car has been voted one of the top five green cars in Britain.”
