When it comes to James Bond 007, I’ve always been a “take it or leave it” kind of guy, more interested in the cars than anything else. I’m getting quite excited about SPECTRE hitting UK cinemas in a mere five weeks’ time, though, the public getting to gorge on all things Bond on the same night as the film’s star-studded premiere on October 26th. Okay, Monica Belluci is partly to do with it, but I’m also looking forward to hearing Sam Smith sing the theme “Writing’s On the Wall” and seeing good ol’ London on the telly; oh, and news of a breath-taking car chase through the streets of Rome has grabbed my attention, too.
This week in the world of cars, the spotlight’s been on Frankfurt where the International Motor Show is taking place, and the German city’s stately Palais Thurn und Taxis (AKA St. Emmeram) was chosen as the location for the unveiling of the vehicles set to appear in SPECTRE. Flying the British flag well and truly, unlike the days when Bond drove BMWs, the headline vehicles in the SPECTRE movie are all Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) creations, from their Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division, in fact.
Moneypenny will once again be played by Naomie Harris who made her Bond debut in Skyfall, in which she drove a Land Rover Defender 110 Double Cab Pick Up. This iconic 4×4 legend of a vehicle will appear in SPECTRE’s gripping action scenes in Austria, where menacing black Defenders heavily modified by JLR Special Ops make mincemeat of the treacherous, snow-covered mountain roads thanks to their hulking 37-inch diameter off-road tyres and beefed-up protection underneath.
The fastest Land Rover ever made, called the Range Rover Sport SVR, also features in SPECTRE, this massive 4×4 SUV capable of sprinting to 60mph in just 4.5 seconds, which is really impressive considering it’s the size of a small house and weighs a tonne, figuratively speaking.
Car fans around the world are especially gagging to see Jaguar’s contribution to SPECTRE, though. As you’d expect for a James Bond film, the Jaguar is suitably flash. It’s called the C-X75, is a hybrid car meaning it’s powered by electric and petrol, it has four-wheel drive for improved traction and grip and produces a whopping 778bhp, which is three-quarters of the original Bugatti Veyron’s power. Jaguar did plan to sell the C-X75 to the handful of lucky lesser mortals who could afford one, but when the credit crunch hit, they canned the idea in 2012 as £900,000ish seemed a bit much. I can’t wait to see the ever-so-sexy Jaguar in action as the main attraction in the car chase scenes through the moonlit streets of Rome, driven by villain and assassin Mr. Hinx. David Bautista, the actor who plays Hinx, commented: “to drive the C-X75 supercar was like a dream come true for me. It truly is a beautiful beast of a car that will go down in movie history.”
Stay tuned to both the Jaguar Land Rover website and the Official James Bond 007 website for further updates on SPECTRE, which sounds like it’s set to be one of the best contemporary James Bond films yet. Bring it on.
